About Marcad

The Malaria Research Capacity Development Consortium (MARCAD) seeks to train a core group of African scientists in West and Central Africa who will be able to provide relevant answers for the control and elimination of malaria. One PhD and two post-docs fellows are hosted at each partner institution across five African countries (Mali, The Gambia, Cameroon, Ghana and Senegal).

The University Cheikh Anta Diop UCAD, Senegal (Prof O. Gaye) leads the Consortium which includes USTTB, Mali (Prof OK. Doumbo); MRC, The Gambia (Prof U. D'Alessandro); UY1, Cameroon (Prof W. Mbacham) and UHAS, Ghana (Prof HK. Tagbor). Three European institutions collaborate in this programme: LSHTM-UK, LSTM-UK and UoC, Denmark.

Project title: Integrating cross border Anopheles and insecticide resistance surveillance in the Senegambia Sub-region: case to strengthen evidence decision making for regional vector control

Biography:

I hold a master's degree in medical entomology from Cheick Anta Diop University (UCAD, Dakar-Senegal). For my Master's thesis, I worked on the “Phenotypic and genotypic resistance of Anopheles arabiensis to insecticides in the Dakar suburbs” at the Laboratoire d'Ecologie Vectorielle et Parasitaire (LEVP-UCAD). To understand the impact of the alternative used of insecticides in Indoor residual spraying in gene resistance in Senegal. I joined Medical Research Council unit in The Gambia at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (MRCG-LSHTM) through a collaborative project named WANETAM Sub-award between MCRG-LSHTM and LEVP/UCAD, where I studied “Evolution and genetic diversity of insecticide resistance genes such as Ace1, Vgsc and Gste2 in Anopheles gambiae populations in ten health districts across Senegal” using the molecular biology facility of MRC-LSHTM.

After I joined the malaria team at MRC-LSHTM as a scientific officer before going back to LEVP-UCAD as Laboratory activities coordinator.

Malaria Research Capacity Development in West and Central Africa (MARCAD-Plus) awarded me with a PhD Fellowship to conduct my research on the “Integrating cross border Anopheles and insecticide resistance surveillance in the Senegambia Sub-region: case to strengthen evidence decision making for regional vector control”. To understand the geographic population structure within species, including the putative cryptic and molecular epidemiology of insecticide resistance to uncover underlying mechanisms supporting the evolution of insecticide resistance.
