CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR MARCAD PLUS POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP 2023 IN GHANA

MARCAD Plus is a consortium of institutions putting together their capacities to contribute significantly to malaria and NTDs elimination in West and Central Africa. MARCAD Plus is sponsored by the Welcome Trust and the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), working in partnership with the Science for Africa Foundation (SFA).

MARCAD Plus is launching a new capacity-building programme for Master, PhD and Postdoctoral fellows in the following thematic areas: Control and elimination of Malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) (Schistosomiasis & Soil-Transmitted Helminths). With this programme, MARCAD Plus seeks to train African scientists able to provide relevant answers for the control and elimination of malaria and NTDs. MARCAD Plus seeks to recruit TWO highly motivated and talented post-doctoral malaria research scientists (an epidemiologist and a laboratory scientist) to join a malaria research team at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) in GHANA.

The Postdoctoral fellowship is for a period of three (3) years and up to €113,272 will be provided to cover salary, research and training costs, mentorship, career development and scientific visits to partner Institutions.

Successful candidates will receive advanced training, supervision and mentorship, as well as international exposure to build their research capacities. The programme will facilitate their networking and collaboration with other institutions and help them become ompetitive for international funding.

 Duties/Responsibilities

· Lead and/or contribute to study conceptualization and design, project management and coordination including development of research tools for use in data collection, field staff recruitment coordination, training and supervision of field staff, data management, data analysis and report writing.

· Conduct and supervise data collection, cleaning and processing and take responsibility for data quality, programming. Carry out statistical analyses with quantitative statistical packages (e.g., STATA or R)

· Collaborate with scientists with diverse backgrounds in the execution of various tasks.

· Support ethical approval process from appropriate ethics committees for research projects.

· Lead and contribute to scientific paper writing.

· Lead community engagement activities to mobilize and sensitize the community about research projects.

· Prepare periodic activities and project reports.

· Participate in disseminating research findings and dialogues on action items with appropriate audiences.

· Prepare policy briefs and fact sheets based on project results.

· Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal Investigator and /or Capacity Development Coordinator.

 

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

1) Candidates with an epidemiological background.

a. PhD in Epidemiology, Public Health, or related fields.

b. Good analytical and computational skills.

c. Strong quantitative skills (managing, analysing and interpreting data), with extensive expertise in medical statistics, biostatistics, modelling and projections.

2) Candidates with a laboratory sciences background.

a. PhD in Laboratory Science or related fields.

b. Candidates should have a particular focus/interest in malaria or neglected tropical diseases.

c. Should be knowledgeable and skilled in providing laboratory services, including malaria microscopy and PCR techniques.

3) Additional skills and experience

a. At least 2 years of professional experience following completion of PhD degree, preferably in a research setting.

b. A good record of publications on relevant areas in sub-Saharan Africa.

c. Ability to work on concurrent projects, prioritize and balance multiple tasks.

d. Ability to work independently as well as part of a team with people from diverse cultures.

e. Ability to manage field staff, research teams and partnerships.

f. Excellent interpersonal, organizational and time management skills with ability to meet tight deadlines.

g. Strong work ethic and ability to work under pressure.

h. Excellent oral and written communication in English.

i. Disposition to work in multidisciplinary teams.
